The Art of Being

I want to talk about something real that I have been working on for quite some time.

I have not mastered this skill yet, but I am practicing it intentionally.

The art of being with someone in their emotion.

Before jumping to solutions and fixes.

Before reassurance.

Before relating it back to something similar I have experienced.

Just being in it.

In the discomfort.

In the messiness.

In the sadness.

And the truth is, this is something I struggle with in myself too.

When I feel a negative emotion rise, my instinct is to escape it.

I reach for my phone and scroll.

I distract myself with a chore.

I lie down and check out.

Anything but actually feeling what I am trying to avoid.

And now that I am paying close attention to this, I see how common it is.

How many of us do almost anything except stay with our feelings.

So I want to invite you to practice this with me.

The next time a difficult emotion starts to simmer - sadness, anxiety, jealousy, hopelessness - pause.

Let it move through your body for a few moments.

Let it be there.

Do not reach for anything.

Do not go anywhere.

Breathe.

Notice.

Stay.

Just be with the very human experience of feeling.

See what happens.

Often, the emotion does not disappear.

But it softens.

It loosens its grip.

It becomes more manageable.

And from that calmer place, you can troubleshoot.

You can problem solve.

You can decide what comes next.

Not from urgency or avoidance, but from presence.

And that is where real clarity begins.
